“Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” ππ (Luke 8:18)
This short but powerful teaching from Yeshu is a true “spiritual compass” for every believer! It teaches us that merely listening is not enough. The key lies in the quality of our listening β in how actively and discerningly we receive what comes to us. This is our spiritual filter that determines our growth or downfall. π§β¨
Yeshu emphasizes two key aspects of this “filtering”:
1. Listening to God β The Source of Truth: Our faith is born from listening to the Word. When we open the Bible, pray, or seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are listening directly to our Creator. This is the foundation. It’s like watering the roots of the tree of life β the more God’s Word is sown in our heart and mind, the deeper our faith is rooted and the more abundant the fruits will be. This is “who has,” who receives with attention and allows the Word to work, to them will be given more. ππ³
2. Listening to people β Sometimes a trap: Yeshu knew that not everything that reaches us is edifying. Especially in spiritual matters, we must be extremely careful. Are the words we hear from preachers, priests, rabbis, or other spiritual leaders consistent with the spirit and letter of Holy Scripture? Do they lead us to Yeshu, or do they lead us away?
Let’s remember that Yeshu himself, standing before the Pharisees β the religious authorities of that time β did not hesitate to throw in their faces: “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your fatherβs desires” (John 8:44). This was not an empty insult, but a warning that even those who sit on the “chairs” of teaching can preach doctrines not from God, but from a completely different source. Therefore, we must discern whose teachings are from the Holy Spirit, and whose are the “whisper of a slanderer,” intended to mislead. Without this discernment, even “what we think we have” in faith can be taken from us. π«π
Reflection for today: How much importance do you attach to “how you listen”? π€ Are your spiritual ears open to the Word of God, and at the same time critical and discerning of human interpretations? Today, consider whether you are not accidentally letting “weeds” into your heart under the pretext of “spiritual teachings.” Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom so that you can always distinguish the voice of the Shepherd from the voice of mercenaries. Remember that investing in attentive and discerning listening is an investment in an eternal future. πΏ
