“Whoever would follow me, but would not want to endure humiliations because of it, cannot be my disciple. Whoever wants to become my disciple should first accept the costs, just like a man who plans to build a tower. He should first check if he can afford to finish it.” ποΈπ° (Lk 14:27-28)
Today Yeshu challenges us with something like a “business plan” for our faith! He is not looking for gullible ones, but for those who will consciously make a decision, understanding the full scale of the “investment”. This is not a train from which you can get off at the nearest station when it gets uncomfortable. This is a journey for which we must be prepared. π€οΈπΌ
Yeshu points to two key aspects of this spiritual calculation:
1. The Price of True Discipleship – The Cross: Verse 27 is uncompromising. Yeshu clearly states that following Him is not only joys and blessings, but also “humiliations” – difficulties, rejection, and sometimes even suffering that can result from faithfulness to His teachings. This is our “cross” – a symbol of readiness for sacrifices. Whoever is not ready for this cannot be a true disciple. This is a cost we must factor in. ππͺ
2. Wisdom and Prudence – The Tower Builder: The metaphor of the tower builder (verse 28) is the essence of pragmatism. Does someone who wants to build a tower start without a plan and without assessing resources? Of course not! He must “check if he can afford to finish it.” Yeshu teaches us prudence here:
β¦ Conscious Decision: Your faith should not be a spontaneous whim, but a deeply thought-out decision, based on understanding all the consequences.
β¦ Avoiding Failure: No one wants to build something they cannot finish – that’s a waste and a cause for shame. Similarly, Yeshu wants us to avoid situations where we start following Him, and then give up because we haven’t accepted the “costs.”
β¦ Faithfulness to the End: Being a disciple is a “life project” that requires consistency and faithfulness until the “completion of the tower.” πβ¨
Reflection for today: Have you really calculated the costs of following Yeshu? π€ Are you ready for the “humiliations” and difficulties that may arise on this path? Or do I treat my faith like a fleeting acquaintance, and not like a lifelong “investment”? Remember that Yeshu invites you to build something lasting and eternal – but it requires full commitment and awareness. What can you do today to make your “tower” of faith stronger? π§±π
If you are ready for this “construction” with Yeshu – write Amen! ππShare in the comments what is the biggest “cost” for you in following Him. ππ
