Some people believe that immersion in water is not necessary. They claim it is troublesome, requires immersing oneself, the presence of witnesses, and traveling, so โimmersion in the spiritโ is enough. However, such a โbaptism in the spiritโ is not verifiable, does not serve as a public testimony of faith to which one could later referโthere are no witnesses confirming that someone has given themselves to Christ. And while it is true that in the end, only the fruits of the Spirit show whether Christ has accepted someone, at least we know that a person who asks for immersion in water declares submission to the will of the Lord. โImmersion in the name of the Lord Yeshu means acknowledging unity with Him.โ This is one of the key elements, and today we will discuss more of them. Immersion is a condition for salvationโnot an absolute 100% guarantee, but a gateway into a relationship with Christ.
The first, fundamental benefit of immersion: the washing away of sins, that is, a radical break from a sinful past. Each of us sins, everyone needs forgiveness. Yes, forgiveness comes by grace from Christ, but the first complete forgiveness occurs at the moment when we die to the old life and are born into a new oneโprecisely during immersion in the name of Yeshu. This teaching was widely known in antiquity. The example of Constantine: he postponed immersion, aware that as a ruler he had murders on his conscience, knowing at the same time that immersion washes away sins. Later, the Catholic Church replaced this logic with โlast ritesโ and confession, but previously people believed in accordance with the teaching of Christ: immersion in the name of Yeshu removes sins.
Acts 2:38 โPeter answered them: Correct yourselves and let each of you immerse in the name of Yeshu the Anointed for the forgiveness of your offenses (sins), and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.โ
Acts 22:16 โWhy do you hesitate now? Get up, immerse yourself and wash away your offenses (sins), calling on His name!โ
So it is clearly written that immersion and calling on the name of the Lord is the way to forgiveness of sins.
1 Peter 3:21 โThe counterpart of this is immersion, which now saves us, not from the filth of the body, but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, made possible through the resurrection of the Anointed Yeshu.โ
We can see, then, that immersion carries the weight of a gateway to salvation, similar to entering the Ark. This is the beginningโentering is one thing, staying faithful is another.
Immersion is also the introduction to the communityโthe Body of Christ.
Acts 2:41 โThose who accepted his teaching were immersed, and about three thousand people were added to them that day.โ
Acts 8:12 โBut when they believed Philip, who was teaching about the rule of God and about the name of Yeshu the Anointed, both men and women accepted immersion.โ
The order: faith in the Kingdom and in the nameโthen immersionโand with it, entry into the community.
1 Corinthians 12:13 โFor all of us, in unity of the Spirit, were immersed into one body, whether we are Judeans or Hellenes, slaves or free, and we have all been given the same Spirit to drink.โ
So immersion unites us with the Body of Christ. Important: this is only the beginning; unfortunately, over time one can fall into pride, fall away, be rejectedโwe will discuss this later.
Immersion is the beginning of unity with the Anointed.
Romans 6:3โ4 โDo you not know that when we were immersed in the Anointed Yeshu, we were immersed into His death? During immersion we became participants in the death of the Anointed and were buried with Him, so that just as the Anointed was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life.โ
Colossians 2:12 confirms this: โBuried with him in immersion, in which you were also raised together with him through faith. The power of God raised Him from the dead.โ
Galatians 3:27 adds beautifully: โFor indeed, you who were immersed in the Anointed, have clothed yourselves with the Anointed.โ
Immersion is being clothed in Christโa very concrete unification.
Thanks to immersion, we become part not only of the earthly community, but also of God’s family.
John 1:12โ13 โBut to all who did receive Him, He gave the power to become children of God, to those who believe in His name – who were born not of blood, nor of the desire of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.โ
Galatians 3:26โ27 โFor you are all children of God through faith in the Anointed Yeshu. For as many of you as were immersed into the Anointed have put on the Anointed.โ
John 3:5 clearly speaks of two conditions: โYeshu answered, Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one is born of water and of Breath, they cannot enter the Kingdom of God.โ
In Acts, we see the usual order: first immersion in water, then a greater measure of Spirit. There was one exceptional episode (Cornelius), where the Spirit was given earlierโprecisely so as not to forbid immersion. But the norm remains: immersion in water as a public act of faith, then the action of the Spirit.
Immersion is an open acknowledgment of Christ.
Matthew 10:32โ33 warns: โTherefore, everyone who confesses Me before people, I will also confess before My Father who is in the heavens, but whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny before My Father who is in the heavens.โ
That is why we do not do this secretly (unless because of persecution).
Acts 8:36โ38 (Ethiopian Eunuch): โAs they traveled along the road, they came to some water: Here is waterโthe official saidโwhat prevents me from being immersed? Philip answered: Nothing, if you believe with all your heart. He replied: I believe that Yeshu Christ is the Son of God. And he ordered the chariot to stop, and both, Philip and the official, went down into the water. And he immersed him.โ
This is strong evidence that we are talking about a real, water immersion, not just โin spirit.โ
The command to immerse was given by the Lord Himself.
Matthew 28:19 in many translations has the trinitarian form, but there are serious textual arguments that it originally read: โGo therefore and teach all nations, giving them immersion in My Name.โ
Regardless of the variantโthe command to immerse remains.
Also Mark 16:15โ16 โAnd he said to them: Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature! Whoever believes and accepts immersion will be saved; but whoever does not believe will be condemned.โ
The Lord Himself did not immerse, but entrusted this to the disciplesโand they did so.
Is immersion a condition for salvation?
Romans 6:3โ4 (union with His death and life), John 3:5 (birth of water and Spirit), 1 Peter 3:21 (the ark as a parallelโit saves). Yesโthis is a necessary element, if only we have the opportunity. The exception was the thief on the cross, who objectively could not be immersedโand the Lord promised him life. But this is an exceptionโnot an excuse for those who can, but do not want to. Delaying can be fatal.
How many times to immerse?
Onceโbut properly. Immersion in any name other than Yeshu is not a proper immersion in Christ.
Acts 4:12: โAnd there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name given to humanity under heaven in which we must be saved.โ
Therefore, there is no salvation โin the name of YHWHโ or in distorted forms; this must be checked diligently. Acts 19:1โ5: disciples immersed โwith John’s immersionโ (from God!) after hearing about Yeshu were immersed โin the name of the Lord Yeshu.โ Thus even immersion โfrom God,โ but not in His name, is not sufficientโit must be immersion in the name of Yeshu. I will add practically: someone else immerses usโit’s a communal act. Self-immersion, without witnesses, misses the point of a public confession. If need be, for complete clarity and peace of conscience, you can ask a brother to immerse you as well (I did so for a clear testimony).
Can one lose the reward of life after immersion?
1 Corinthians 10:1โ12 shows that Israel โpassed through the seaโ (image of baptism), ate spiritual food, drank spiritual drinkโyet most were not pleasing to God. Why? Idolatry, immorality, testing the Lord, grumbling. This was written โas a warning,โ so that after a good beginning we would not fall. Immersion opens the way, but one must remain faithful and humble.
โDoes โto believe in His nameโ refer only to character, and not the actual name?โ
Yes, a โgood nameโ is also about reputation, but in the Bible God attaches great importance to the specific name of the Son. The angels announced it to both Miriam and Joseph, even giving the reasonโโfor He will save.โ The name is the carrier of identity and mission. There is no biblical teaching that โeveryone can call Christ whatever they want.โ Different names in pagan religions hide different beings. In the Bible, the Lordโs name is one and given to all โunder heaven.โ
What does the word โChristianโ mean?
In the Acts, disciples were first called โof Christโโbelonging to the Anointed One. Thus, the word โChristianโ no longer reflects that proprietary relationship. More precisely: โof Christโ (of the Anointed)โmeaning His possession, the people belonging to King Yeshu.
An interesting fact: the Bible warns against โpharmakeiaโโa term usually translated as โsorcery,โ but in secular sources meaning โthe art of making mixtures/medicines.โ This is an important warning clue, still relevant today. It shows that Scripture is no random bookโit carries light from above and astonishingly accurate insights. Of course, we do not deny all forms of emergency medicine; the warning concerns abuse and deception in the name of โhealing.โ
To sum up:
โข Immersion in the name Yeshu washes away sins and begins a new life.
โข It brings one into the Body of Christ and unites with the Lord.
โข It is a public act of faith and obedience to the Lordโs command.
โข It opens the way to being born of the Spirit and living in Godโs family.
โข It is a requirement of salvation for those who can receive it (exceptions are not an excuse for delay).
โข One must remain faithfulโso as not to fall after a good beginning.
